Definition of Anthropofens

The project name, "Anthropofens", is a contraction of two words: "Anthropocene", which is used to describe the present period in the Earth's history, during which human activity has had a significant influence on the entire biosphere, and "Fens", the peat marshland resulting mainly from underground waters.
The project aims to restore alkaline fen ecosystems, most of which have been modified by human action over the past few centuries for agricultural purposes.
The name was chosen in reference to the challenges raised by conserving these longstanding ecosystems inherited from the Holocene period (which began 11,550 years ago) and whose exceptional biodiversity successfully survived until the present Anthropocene era.
