Welcome to the official LIFE Anthropofens website !

On the initiative of the Conservatoire d’espaces naturels, nine structures in the Hauts-de-France region and Wallonia implement an action plan financed by the European LIFE fund and focusing on alkaline fens in northern France and Belgium.

These are fragile and endangered habitats, but also very rich in biodiversity.
The ambitious initiatives in terms of scope, innovation and partnerships will bring benefits to 480 hectares of peatland on 13 different sites belonging to the Natura 2000 network.

This is the big challenge that the LIFE Anthropofens programme will be tackling until the end of 2025.

Peatland or mire, are global terms describing a complex reality. Depending on the ecological and geographical context, peatlands can take many different aspects, creating as many different landscapes and unique natural sites.

Anthropofens : Définition

The name “Anthropofens” comes from the contraction of two words : Anthropocen and fens. The first one means the era where human influence has been active for thousands of years, while the second one refers to a particular type of peatland in which the main water supply comes from the chalk-ground aquifer.

You can already register to join us for these three days (plus an optional visit on the fourth day!).

This will be an opportunity to present seven years of work, monitoring, and awareness-raising dedicated to the preservation of fens. It will also be a special moment to exchange and share with many speakers from other regions, and to discover their experiences and perspectives.
